			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ground source heat pumps present a relatively low-priced and environmentally friendly way to use spare heat from the earth for heating and cooling both residential and business buildings. Initial set-up prices can be quite a bit higher than normal air-source systems, but geothermal heat pumps provide considerably reduce ownership costs over the long term. Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are devices that utilize the earth?s heat to provide heating, cooling and hot water for commercial companies and houses. The systems are designed to take advantage of the fact that temperatures are at a nearly constant level of between 7 C and 21 C just a few feet underneath the ground, regardless of geographic location or surface air temperatures. In the course of winter, the devices essentially draw out heat from the ground and transport it to a commercial building or home, while in summer the systems draw out heat from building interiors and shift it to the ground. Ground source heat pumps are electrically powered and are sometimes referred to as geothermal heat pumps, or geo-exchange pumps, or merely as earth-coupled heat pumps. A full-fledged GSHP device is made up of a heat pump, a ground loop system for taking in heat from the ground or rejecting it back to the earth, and air ducts or radiant floor systems for delivering the hot or cold air. The ground loop system typically is composed of numerous loops of plastic tubing filled up with antifreeze liquid or water, hidden under the ground in horizontal or vertical way. During winter, the liquid in the loops gathers heat from the earth and forces it to the heat pump when a compressor increases the temperature even more before circulating it through the building. The flow of the liquid inside the loops is reversed throughout summer. This results in the warmer air being drawn out from the building and shifted to the earth while cooler liquid is distributed back to the heat pump and then throughout the building. An open loop system functions in pretty much the same style, but in this case the liquid in the loops is usually ejected into the earth. Ground source heat pumps have been in use since the 1940s and are considered a more environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient alternative to standard air-transfer based heating and cooling systems. Studies have found that GSHP systems have heating efficiencies up to 70% higher than conventional systems and cooling efficiencies of nearly 40% more than air-conditioners. The preliminary cost of setting up a geothermal heat pump can be quite steep compared to standard heating and cooling systems. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We&#8217;re looking for answers to questions we have not fully formed.  Today&#8217;s world is changing so quickly we&#8217;re not sure we can keep up with it.  After several hundred years of industrialization, mankind is finally affecting the global environment at an easily measurable pace.  We have surpassed even cows in producing environment altering gases that change how our atmosphere works.  We may disagree on the details of what will happen next, but we all pretty much agree that change is in the wind &#8212; literally.</p>
<p>A recent series of articles on <a href="http://www.sf-fandom.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=32877">science fiction and environmentalism</a> has received some attention.  People are starting to sit up and take notice of the immense responsibility we have taken upon ourselves for altering our world environment.  But we cannot just look at &#8220;fixing&#8221; the problems we have created (changing weather patterns, loss of tree cover, extermination of irreplaceable species, etc.).  We must also look at how we&#8217;re going to survive on Planet Earth for the next few hundred years.</p>
<p>There are no viable alternatives to this world.  We cannot just hop on board a few million space ships and go find another planet.  In fact, even if we could colonize other worlds only a very small fraction of humanity would be able to make the trip.  The vast majority of people would remain behind on Earth, still facing all the problems that overindustrialization, overcrowding, and overpolluting have created.</p>
<p>In one fascinating attempt to outline global strategies that humanity could initiate, science fiction writer Michael Martinez suggests that we could <a href="http://sffandom.wordpress.com/2010/01/28/should-man-change-his-environment/">irrigate our largest deserts</a> to create new arable land, new wetlands, and possibly alternate habitats for vanishing species.  Poor nations with few resources could transform themselves into gardens rich with wildlife, farms, and biofuel production facilities.  The 22nd century would not have to suffer because of the excesses of the 21st century.</p>
<p>Such radical thinking is bound to draw criticism.  Some people don&#8217;t want to lose their multi-million acre deserts to farms and artificial wetlands.  They&#8217;d rather leave the desolate wastes as Mother Nature shaped them.  But the Sahara desert alone has passed from desert to wetland three times in the past 120,000 years.  Why should man not try to effect the change again?  It&#8217;t not like the <a href="http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_are_the_Green_Police">Green Police</a> will suddenly show up and tell us how to fix the problem.  We have to think creatively now.</p>

<p>Mesothelioma patients have historically had a bleak outlook, but doctors have recently made progress.
