A Brief History Of Gibson Guitars

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Gibson guitars have been around forever. It’s funny, but although Gibson has produced some of the most amazing guitars in history, perhaps the company’s largest contribution to music has been through their advancements in pickup technology. Gibson’s first electric guitar the ES-150 was produced in 1936, and is still considered one of the best sounding electric jazz guitars in the world.

In 1946 Gibson introduced the P-90 single coil pickup, which was eventually used on the first Les Paul model in 1952. The Les Paul was Gibson’s first solid body electric guitar. In 1957 Gibson introduced the legendary Humbucker pickup on the Les Paul model, and an instant classic was born. The P-90 and the Humbucker quickly became the pickups of choice for Gibson’s expanding line of solid body electric guitars.

1961 marked the introduction of one of Gibson’s most successful models ever, the double cutaway SG. This was followed by the Firebird, and Flying V models, each a classic in its own right. In addition to electrics, Gibson produces some of the finest acoustic guitars available.

Gibson’s commitment to excellence, and support of top musicians is demonstrated most deeply through its well known Custom Shop. The Custom Shop produces specialty instruments for artists, and discerning musicians. In addition, many well known historic classics have been faithfully reproduced by the Gibson Custom Shop, allowing a whole new generation of guitarists to experience Gibson’s hallmark guitars.

Beyonce Knowles and Lady Gaga Team up on Track Called Video Phone

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Lady GaGa recently teased her cameo part in Beyonce Knowles‘ “Video Phone” music video. The dance queen said in an interview with Z100 radio station that she wants to do less GaGa and leans more to Beyonce’s style.

“When I was doing her video with her, she called me and she said, ‘What do you want to do?’ ” she stated. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t want to show up in some frickin’ hair bow and be fashion Gaga in your video.’ I said, ‘I want to do you’.”

“I want to do my version of Beyonce. So the whole time I was learning the choreography, they were calling me Gee-yonce,” Lady GaGa continued. Still in the same occasion, she also confirmed about collaborating with Beyonce in her re-release album “The Fame: Monster”.

In the fickle world of modern pop, it’s important to remind people that you’re still around, and with that in mind, Beyoncé’s spinning off another track from I Am… Sasha Fierce. ‘Broken-Hearted Girl’ is the seventh US single from the album – the same number that Michael Jackson’s era-defining Thriller managed – and the fifth in the UK. Of course, its release also coincides nicely with the cash-in platinum edition of last year’s multi-million selling LP.

The song itself? Well, it features a pleasant mix of cascading piano and tender strings, and though it’s let down somewhat by the hollowness of the drum sounds, it’s still a classy, well-constructed pop ballad. Sadly, it doesn’t quite have the magnetic pull of her best work, like ‘Crazy In Love’, ‘If I Were A Boy’ and those still-peerless Writing’s On The Wall/Survivor-era Destiny’s Child singles. Nevertheless, the emotion-filled vocals offer yet more proof that Beyoncé is one of the finest pop singers of her generation.

Youtube End Dispute with PRS over Music Video Streaming

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

The licensing agreement covers online music videos streamed via the online video platform and will be backdated to January 2009, when YouTube’s previous licence expired. The agreement means the songwriters, composers and music publishers that PRS For Music represents will be rewarded when their music is used.

YouTube has resolved its licensing dispute with UK royalties body PRS For Music, signing a deal that sees premium music videos reinstated on YouTube in the UK.

The deal draws to a close a very public spat that in March saw YouTube parent Google saying PRS had proposed new payment terms that would see YouTube paying out more than it makes from the ads placed beside each video. PRS hit back, saying that YouTube’s announcement was made in the middle of negotiations with no consultation, adding that it was “outraged on behalf of consumers and songwriters.”

However, today PRS For Music’s MD of broadcast and online Andrew Shaw said: “It is important that those who are creating music – the writers and composers we represent – be rewarded when their works are used.

“YouTube is a popular online video destination, and this new licence continues to support musical talent. This is an achievement for songwriters, composers and the YouTube community alike and it reinforces the value of our members’ work.”

Patrick Walker, YouTube’s director of video partnerships, added: “We are dedicated to establishing and fostering relationships that make YouTube a place where existing fans and new audiences can discover their favourite content – whatever it might be.”
