Amosa’s Pot Bet Bluff Tell

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

On 2 months 2 million this week, there was finally some decent poker online play showed. The guys had a 36-hour lockdown where they would do nothing but eat sleep and play poker online. They could not leave the confines of the “war room” with exception to use the bathroom and walk around their house for a few minutes.

The session was a success. The team made about $400,000 in that 36-hour period.

While this sounds amazing, before the upswing we must recognize that it was prefaced by some nasty beats and some big losses.

Krantz, one of the biggest players and accordingly the poker player with the highest variance, spent a lot of time losing in a high stakes match against David Peat (Viffer and Amosa are his online handles).

After what could have been hours of getting completely dominated and reloading (even borrowing $80,000 from a housemate transfer) Krantz finally found Amosa’s tell and he exploited it to the max.

Krantz noticed that every time Amosa bet the pot, he was bluffing. Apparently he did not realize what that he had this huge tell, because he stacked off about $350,000 to Krantz in he session, who at times was making very light calls with King high, or bottom pair.

The lesson to be learned from this is that even if you are losing, you have to remain focused and try to find whatever holes your opponent shows you at the casino, and exploit them. Sometimes players unconsciously take longer amounts of time to do certain plays, or short ones to do others. Keep an keen eye on their every move, and you should be able to find a weakness.

The First American Casino

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Today we have many choices for online poker and casino. In gambling and poker centers the brick and mortar casinos vie among themselves for our custom. They try to outshine each other using neon lights and enticing advertisements. The same competition is apparent in online casinos that ruthlessly undercut the competition to try to attract our money. This way not always the case. Originally there was just one casino, with no completion and no need for rivalry. The American casino as we know it can be roughly traced to a single New Orleans casino opened in 1822 by John Davis. This 19th century casino, like the modern online poker casino was similar to the modern brick and mortar casino in many ways. It was open 24 hours a day, offered food and games to its patrons, and provided enough beautiful women to distract the gamblers. Davis’s idea soon caught on in New Orleans as other people tried to replicate his success. Casinos soon could be found on every street on the thriving port city. The New Orleans of the 19th century could be easy mistaken for a modern gambling metropolis like Las Vegas (without the neon lights of course). What we have today all traces back to the humble New Orleans casino opened by John Davis.

Limping with Aces

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Pocket Aces are the best starting online poker hand in Texas Hold ‘Em, and most often players lucky enough to get the “Pocket Rockets” bet out big with them. They are announcing that their hand is hard to beat and throwing out a challenge to call. Occasionally, some poker online players will slow play pocket Aces with the intention to let others do the betting. They assume their pocket rockets are unbeatable. And most often, two aces in the hole will be the winning hand. But Aces do get cracked, and limping into a pot with them is a risky move. It is taking a gamble that no one will improve to trips, two pair, a flush or straight on the flop. With pocket Aces, a big bet pre-flop will most likely win you a small amount of chips if no one calls. Limping with Aces, however, could wind up costing you a lot of chips if they get beat. It is very difficult to lay down the pocket rockets. Players almost always play this hand to the river even when the flop indicates a flush or straight is likely to beat the highest ranked poker pair. If you’re in early position with Aces, a value bet might be your best play. It will chase most players, but most likely one or two callers will remain. Once the flop hits, you can bet out big if the board is non-threatening. With Aces, you must think about which scenario you prefer: win a small amount by making everyone fold right away, or potentially lose a lot because your Aces get cracked but you can’t fold them.

Hog Roast Catering

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

A recommendation from a family member or friend is a good way of finding a wedding or outside hog roast caterer. They can be hard to cook at times and the ovens can be temperamental therefore a knowledgeable spit roast company should be sought out. A good hog roast is usually the centre piece of your party, something your invitees will talk about for years to come. Ideally your hog should be prepared from fresh on site, so make sure your caterer offers this.Google is a great way of finding a specialized hog/spit roast company. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You can usually get a good feel whether the catering company is experienced by asking a few relevant questions. Book early, at least 3 months in advance if you can as hog roasting has become so popular most companies are fully booked for the summer and Xmas before it gets to the end of May. But above all relish the thought of the tastiest, most juicy piece of meat you’ve ever had dripping with mouth watering juices and the crispiest golden brown crackling you’ve ever consumed, once you’ve had spit roasted pork you won’t be able to go back. Enjoy!

Plan for Saturday

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

You can wake up each day and go through your normal routine and as you pull out of the driveway you see the yard and all the many things that need to be done. The trees need trimming, the grass needs cut, and the mulch needs to be put down. What should you do? You could stop the car and get out and skip out on work and get the yard stuff done, or you could make a plan. Planning your Saturday out will give you more time to focus in on other things during the week. If the yard work is bothering you then you will not be able to get the stuff done during the week. Having the yard look a certain way for a few days is not that bad. Make sure that when you do get out there on Saturday that you eat a healthy meal beforehand and take your diet product so you can make the most of the time. The plan could be that you divide the work up into sections. Maybe the plan could go like this: the morning for tree trimming, mid day for the grass cutting, and then put the mulch down for the rest of the evening. After you are done the drive down your driveway will be very rewarding and fulfilling for you.

Drawing in Blackjack

Monday, April 6th, 2009

When I play blackjack or poker online, the people who insist that they can improve their odds of winning by drawing more cards baffle me. It’s understandable when the dealer is showing a high card, say a 7 or above, but I just don’t get why people try to get closer to 21 if they dealer’s showing a bust card. If you’re playing blackjack, like other casino games, keep this in mind-the easiest (and most common) way for you to win is to have the dealer bust. If you get 21, that’s great, there’s nothing wrong with a guaranteed win, but if the dealer has a bust card, there’s no need for you to risk busting as well. A ten-value card (10’s and face cards unlike in online poker) is the most prevalent card in the deck, so the odds are that you’ll draw one. If you’ve got a 12 or higher, you want to keep your draws at a minimum. It’s usually a safe assumption that the dealer has a ten for his down card, so if he has a 7 showing, you should assume that he has 17. If you’ve got anything less than seventeen, you’re beaten anyway, so then it’s worth the risk to try to raise your value.

Never Enough: Another Primer-esque Piece on Poker Pot-Odds

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I’ve heard several different ways to explain pot-odds in poker, and it seems everywhere you turn, everyone has their own ways of explaining what exactly they are. One of the best and most concise definitions I’ve ever heard was this: pot-odds are the odds you get on the call you make.

Now with simplicity aside, it’s time to see this in action, and more importantly, it’s time to see why they’re so important in poker. An easy example is to use a base number. We’ll use 100. There’s 100 in the pot, and it costs 20 to play. Basically, you have to risk 20 to win 100. Those odds are 100:20 or 5 to 1. That’s a pretty good ratio. But that alone doesn’t mean much without more information.

See, pot-odds are situational. To determine whether or not you can justify a call using the odds, you have to know a few things. Those things are called outs and your chances of hitting your out on the next card. Let’s use the example above. You have in your hand AhKh and the flop comes 7h 8h Jd. What this means for you is that you have the nut flush draw. Another heart would give you in all probability the best hand. So let’s calculate the odds using the numbers above to see whether or not you have the pot odds to call. Remember the odds are 5:1 or 100:20.

In order to figure this out, you have to figure the odds of your outs. There are 13 hearts in a deck, and you know 4 are in play. This means you can assume that 9 are still available theoretically. Now I know you could argue that other players may have held a heart or two, but that’s why this is odds and probability and not algebra. So with your two cards and the three cards in play, you have a 9/47 chance that one of the next cards will be a heart. That roughly translates to 19/100 or 19% chance that a heart will come on the turn. The same is true for the river card only the number is 9/46, which still comes out to about 19%. So our chances of hitting the flush according to the laws of probability are about 38%.

Let us combine the two. You have to risk 20% of the pot on a 38% chance to win. Your risk is lower than your reward. So in this case, the pot odds justify your call. Basically, if you lose 20 dollars 6 out of 10 times, you lose 120 dollars. But if you win 100 dollars 4 out of 10 times, you win 400 dollars. Your net gain is 280, so in the long run, this kind of betting will pay off. Now remember, this can be done for any hand and with diligence, you’ll learn to save and make money in a most efficient manner. And that is the pot odds in poker.

Blackjack — when to Hit

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Online casino Blackjack is a quick, fun, and exciting casino game, but don’t be fooled by it’s apparent simplicity-sometimes it’s tough to know when to get that next card. Kind of like poker, but more random!

It’s tempting to go a little overboard here, because you really want that 21. I understand. But use your head, because the last thing you want to do is bust-make that dealer work for it.

-If you’ve got a 9 or lower, obviously hit. You know for sure the next card can’t bust you here.

-If you’ve got a 10 or 11, you’ve got a choice to make. Double down if the dealer’s up card is less than 10. If the dealer’s got a 10 or Ace, just hit.

-If you’ve been dealt anything from 12 to 16, it’s time to look at the dealer. One of the sweetest rules of blackjack states that the dealer has to hit if his cards don’t add up to at least 17, meaning that he has a decent chance of busting if he’s got, say a 14, 15, or 16. So if you’re stuck with a questionable hand like a 12, see if the dealer’s up card is lower than seven. If he does, you know he’ll have to hit at least once, so stay and pray that he’ll bust.
