Get Intimate with Asia: Travel to Korea

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

South Korea is one of the smaller nations in Asia, with a size comparable to the state of Indiana. What it lacks in size it makes up for in abundant culture, turbulent history, exquisite cuisine and a generous and welcoming society.

A Little Background before You Travel to Korea
The Korean peninsula has been literally and figuratively stuck between a rock and a hard place, namely Japan and China, for most of its existence. The region was prosperous under the three kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla during the first four centuries AD until the Mongolians raided the land and built an empire. The 16th century brought the end of the Mongolian Empire and the beginning of a massive game of tug-of-war between China and Japan over the strategic landmass. After World War II Korea finally broke free from Japan, with the USSR managing the North and the United States occupying the South. Today the North and South are two sovereign nations separated by a demilitarized zone. South Korea is officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK) and commonly referred to simply as Korea.

There’s Still Soul in Seoul
Despite the fact that Seoul was largely burned to the ground during the Korean War (1950-53), the northern part of the capital city is still home to hundreds of spectacular palaces and shrines. The Chosun Dynasty’s Gyeongbokgung Palace is a 5.4 million square foot landmark with a 500-year history and stands among the remaining four palaces in Seoul. Nearly an entire day is necessary to explore the regal palace in all its magnificence. The Jongmyo Royal Shrine is a perfect next stop, as it was where the Chosun Dynasty worshipped. On the first Sunday of May each year a traditional memorial ceremony is held at the Shrine with all the grandeur of the occasion 500 years past.

The southern part of Seoul is the commercial center of the city and boasts a fascinating blend of traditional and hyper-modern architecture. It is also home to World Cup Stadium, intricately weaving shopping streets and even an amusement park, Lotte World. Make sure to visit the city gates, and then venture beyond into the strikingly lush and green landscape to travel Korea more personally.

When to Travel to Korea
Korea has a temperate clime, which results in heavier rain in the summer months (July and August) and a drier winter. Winter is white and snowy all over Korea and the ski season from November to March is extremely popular. There are 13 ski resorts in South Korea alone! After a day on the slopes it is common to relax in one of the many spas with natural hot spring baths. Summer is extremely crowded and very wet in Korea. For milder weather it is best to travel Korea in the spring or fall.

Traveling to South Korea any time of year is sure to be an exciting and rewarding experience, regardless of the weather!

London for a Weekend

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Planning a weekend in London but don’t know how to make the most of your stay? Don’t worry…help is at hand!

If you’re in London for a relatively short stay then you’ll want to make sure that you see the best of the city – here are a few tips on how you can have the best visit possible.

Firstly, plan ahead and make sure that you book accommodation that will best suit your interests. You’ll probably fly in to one of the 3 largest airports (Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted) but it’s probably best to book a hotel in a more central location, rather than close to any of the airports. That’s not just for reasons of noise – each of the airports are a little way out of the centre, so booking a hotel in a more central location will leave you more time to enjoy your stay.

You should also book your hotel to suit your budget and your requirements. If you’re intending to spend your days out sight-seeing and your evenings eating out or going to catch a show then it may be that you’ll barely be in your hotel. If that’s the case, then why not opt for a slightly cheaper hotel and maximise your available budget by spending the money that you save on entertainment.

There’s plenty to see in London and the biggest problem that you’ll have will be narrowing down the options. It’s worth getting a good map of the city, as you’ll find that a lot of the central locations are within easy walking distance – this means that you can make better use of your time, as you’ll see plenty above ground that you’d otherwise miss if you were on the Underground.

As an example, Buckingham Palace, the Cabinet War Rooms, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey are all within easy walking distance of each other. That means that you can cover those attractions relatively easily. In fact, once you get to the Houses of Parliament, you’ll also be able to see the London Eye, which is also easily reached by crossing Westminster Bridge. Pre-book attractions where possible. When it comes to spending a weekend in a city, it’s important to be organised. Pre-booking attractions and pre-arranging routes around London may feel like a bore when you’re sitting at home but it will save you plenty of time when you reach the city.

There’s plenty to do in the evenings, with the various London shows always being popular. The heart of London’s theatre land is to be found in Shaftesbury Avenue and you’ll also find plenty of eating options nearby (particularly in Soho and Covent Garden). Many of the top restaurants have websites, so you can pre-book these too before arrival in London, if a particular one has caught your eye. Many restaurants will offer pre-theatre menus: these are served before show times, ensuring that you can get a meal before heading off to the theatre.

To sum up, the key to having a great experience in London is to plan your stay in advance. Get a good map, find a centrally located hotel and pre-book as much as possible.

A Primer to Mesothelioma: Unusual Cancer

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Cancer of the mesothelium is a uncommon cancer of the tissue that lines the person’s interior organs. Around two thousand brand new cases are detected each year in the whole US. Of these, nearly 75 percent of occurrences affect the sac that protects the lungs, called the pleura. Also known as pleural mesothelioma. In almost 10 to twenty percent of cases, malignant mesothelioma could concern the tissue that surrounds visceral organs, called the peritoneal membrane, causing what is then known as peritoneal mesothelioma.

Introduction to asbestos is positively the primary influencing factor for this uncommon cancer. After asbestos exposure, the delay to progression of the mesothelioma disease may be 2 to 4 decades. As a result of occupational introduction, mesothelioma is about three times more routine in males, than in women. Because the number of occurrences goes up with your age, there are nearly 10 times more cases in the men over age 64 than in the men in their 30s.

Being diagnosed with Mesothelioma is a serious cancer, that, at the current time, has a decidedly low rate of lasting endurance. Although, if it is spotted soon, regimens are then available that can seriously extend the patient’s life. New therapies continue to be and are being promoted through the use of clinical trials.

What Testosterone Booster Should You Try?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

One of my favorite supplementation companies is Gaspari nutrition. Go to any gym and you’ll notice people exercising who are utilizing Gaspari nutritional supplements. Gaspari is a supplementation company that has a allegiance to creating the best of the best when it comes to bodybuilding supplements that work as claimed.

Unlike some supplementation companies they do not produce a myriad of supplements. At times producers formulate so many variants of bodybuilding supplements that it creates a situation where it is difficult to recognise what to use and when to use it.

These supplements are outstanding and in addition you’ll not be disappointed. Do not take my word for it. Visit your exercise club and begin to inquire regarding what supplements they are taking. I will bet a couple of them will say they are taking Gaspari nutrition products.

Their Holodrol liquigels are outstanding. Gaspari Nutrition IntraPro Whey Protein is also very good. Novedex XT Testosterone Booster is first-rate. In fact, this product might just be the best the industry has to offer. It seems to e that few people have anything negative to state about Novadex. How one supplement affects one person might be different than how it affects another person. Nonetheless, Gaspari nutrition looks to have a well-deserved reputation for outstanding products.

If you are considering trying a new brand and have not tried Gaspari nutrition, consider this brand. If you have never utilised any supplements before and are considering trying to take some bodybuilding supplements to take your training to new levels, then Gaspari nutrition is a strong company to begin utilising.

Only in Russia – Tinda

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

While living in Siberia for a year, I agreed to speak at a human rights conference. Only in Russia will you find a place like Tinda, a city we stopped in on our way.

Trans-Siberian Railway

When living in Siberia, the only way to get around is car, helicopter or the Trans-Siberian Railway. Since I had neither a car nor helicopter, the train it was. Unfortunately, the train to my conference left at 4 AM after a night spent trying to acquire a travel visa on the sly, which meant drinking a lot of visa.

Dutifully, my travel partner, Oleg Vladimirovich, and I made the train where we were met by a local reporter, Nina, who was coming along. The Trans-Siberian Railway can offer some amazing views, but not at four in the morning. I went to sleep.

The thing about Russia is you simply can’t grasp how big it is. Although we were traveling in the same state ["oblast"], the trip took 30 hours. Since it was winter, the view out the train was mostly of snow covered trees. Yes, it sounds romantic until you have to sit there for a day. Fortunately, the Russians have good taste as the train radio blared John Lee Hooker most of the way. No, I don’t know why.

Tinda

Only in Russia will you find a city like Tinda. During the Stalin era, it was determined that the timber and natural resources in a particular spot of Siberia were very valuable. Unfortunately, nobody lived within 500 miles of so of the location. To solve the problem, the authorities decided to build a railroad and city from scratch.

Building in the middle of Siberia is just a slight challenge. Just to get to the location of Tinda, the Russians had to build a railway over permafrost, bogs, huge mountain ranges, roaring rivers and I won’t even mention the bugs in the summer.

The unfortunately named BUM railway was started in 1930 and finished in 1984. During this process, hundreds of five story concrete buildings were built to form the city of Tinda. A hundred thousand people were uprooted from their homes and moved to this city in the middle of nowhere. Walla, the communist authorities had a labor force to exploit the natural resources.

With the fall of communism, the authorities in Russia are no longer interested in the area. The city is failing and people are flocking to live in cities with jobs and better wages. The ones that remain in Tinda are in desperate straits. It is a sad statement to the legacy of communism, where the interests of the state dominated.

Where To Find Cheap Vacations? No Problem!

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

A lot of people are in search of cheap vacations they could avail of so that they could make the most of what they could afford. The question in these people’s minds is this: where exactly could we find packages offering cheap vacations?

Alas, finding cheap vacations is not the answer. The power is in our hands, you see. We have direct control over how much a vacation would cost, and all we need is sound financial planning and a dedication to find the best deals available.

The question is not “where to find cheap vacations?” Rather, what you should be asking is this: how could you ensure a cheap vacation for yourself and your family? Here are some tips to help you out.

* Quality supercedes quantity. You don’t have to purchase a lot of items to guarantee a great time. You will spend your vacation for the experience, and experience can never be facilitated by material things. Keep this in mind when preparing what to bring and planning what to buy.

* You don’t need expensive lodging. Remember, you’ll be in a foreign place. You will go out to experience the culture and view the beautiful sceneries. Most of the time, you’ll be outside. A serviceable room would be enough for your purposes.

* Don’t settle for the first restaurant you’d see. Consult the locals what the best deal in town is, one which would not compromise the taste of the food for the price you would stand to save.

* Tips can pile up to quite a substantial sum. Remember, tips are never mandatory. They are optional. You have the liberty not to extend some. Since cheap vacations are what you have in mind, you have to remind yourself that you don’t have the luxury of providing for tips. You could spend the money on something else, after all.

* Public transportation is always, always more affordable than a taxi cab or a hired vehicle. Also, you’d be able to immerse yourself in the place if you’d resort to the common transportation that the locals themselves use.

Cheap vacations are often manufactured. You have the power to make any vacation as budget-friendly as possible. So instead of looking for cheap vacations, try to condition your mind that it’s all in your hands.
