The True Story of Lambo the Elephant – Terror of Pre-Revoltionary Odessa, Ukraine

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

When you talk to modern Odessites in Odessa Ukraine today, they will talk about an elephant who rampaged the streets of Odessa. The story is true. This is the origin of this tale.

“Elephant Sentenced to Death” shrieked a one and a half-inch-high banner in an April 1914 edition of Odesskaia pochta, a local Odessa newspaper. Iambo, an elephant recently transferred to the Odessa zoo, had been sentenced to death for attempted murder of his zoo keeper. Before this story was concluded, Iambo would become a cause celebre not only in the black seaport city of Odessa, but throughout Russia.

According to one of the zookeepers, by April Imabo’s entire character had changed. He began flapping his ears, trumpeting in a sinister manner, and worse, bending back the bars of his cage. The zookeeper responded with a few swift blows with a iron rod. Iambo would have none of this, and began repeatedly striking the zookeeper with his trunk. The zookeeper was hit so hard he had to go to the hospital, unconscious, for a week.

This incident was dismissed as the elephant’s youthful indiscretion, but a week later the elephant was again causing trouble, rattling and trying to get free of his chains. The circus administrator decided to seek the advice of local city administrators. The chief of police, after taking detailed eye-witness statements, decided the only thing to do was to euthonize the violent elephant. After the death sentence was given, the problem facing the authorities was how to execute the elephant? Various methods were suggested, including stabbing and shooting him (it was decided it would only feel like a pin-prick and enrage Iambo further). It was finally agreed that poison would be the best remedy.

Now circus administrators had to figure out how to poison the beast. A poison orange was lobbed into the cage, but Iambo simply picked it up and threw it back at the zookeepers. Next a second orange was thrown into the cage, it was examined and promptly crushed underfoot. The zookeepers then offered a third fruit without poison and the elephant quickly ate it. Frustrated, the zookeepers decided to change tactics. Vodka was suggested, a drink which Iambo had a weakness for. It was usually difficult to find vodka at 6:00 in the morning, but the police knew where to find it. The elephant was then presented with a barrel of vodka mixed with cyanide. Iambo stuck his trunk in the barrel, then kicked it over with all of his power.

Frustrated, the zookeepers decided another tactic. The military commander was called in to shot the animal. But the commander refused, saying Iambo’s skin was too tough.

Soon, the story of Iambo was in newspapers across imperial Russia. The overwhelming majority of Russians rallied to Iambo, wanting to save him. A local movie production studio even made a movie about Iambo. The circus manager even got death threats and one of the zookeepers was attacked.

Meanwhile, the flustered zookeepers contemplated exploding bullets, sleeping pills, and hanging to kill poor Iambo.

As a compromise, the circus manger brought in two female elephants, hoping to calm the aggressive elephant. As one of the female elephants was exiting the train, she escaped, running down Pushkinskaia street. This caused a general panic because the public thought insane Iambo was lose. The she elephant was recaptured and presented to Iambo.

Unfortunately, the female elephants womanly charms did not calm the beast. In June the elephant attacked another trainer. It was decided by the Odessa authorities it was time to kill Iambo. Hundreds of bullets were shot into Iambo. Word spread like wildfire throughout Odessa, all of Iambo’s supporters were in tears.

The zookeepers labored all night to remove the massive body. The circus manager wanted to transfer the elephant to the anatomical institute with little or no publicity. But word leaked out, and at six in the morning thousands of Odessites lined the streets to see Iambo’s funeral procession. During the autopsy, over one hundred bullets were removed. But the university determined that there was no medical evidence showing that disease had caused Iambo to act so erratically. Iambo’s skin was taken to the taxidermist. The legend of Iambo, like so many Russian tales, ended tragically.

Best South American City You Never Heard Of

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

When people think of traveling to or studying in a large South American city, they often think of Santiago, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro first. Many overlook the countless treasures to be found in other South American cities. Cordoba, Argentina is one that is often overlooked, but one can find infinite attractions in this city at a fraction of the cost of its popular huge city competitors. There are so many reasons why Cordoba, Argentina is the best city in South America that you never knew about.

Marlo Goldstein, a seasoned veteran in travel throughout Latin America, says: I hesitate to say it because I’m still so new here, but here goes: I think I could fall in love with this place. There I said it. My goal now is to do everything possible to get to know it as well as possible in a short amount of time. I like that no one knows I am a foreigner until I speak. The people here dress and look very European/American. I feel very inconspicuous and very safe. I like the changing seasons (which I haven’t ever experienced in a Latin American country. Central America just has wet and dry). I also like that outside the city is country and country people, it looks more like the Latin America that I know and love.

Cordoba is the second most important city in Argentina and it is called the Heartland of Argentina. It is located at the intersection of the routes that went from Chile and the Alto Peru (Bolivia) to the port of Buenos Aires; it was the most important city during the colonial period. Some 300 years later, Cordoba has retained its rich colonial heritage, as shown by its culture and architecture. The Rio Primero, forms Cordoba’s main natural landmark. The Physical center is the Plaza San Martin, named after Argentina’s great liberator and the site of the city’s cathedral. South of the Plaza is Calle Obispo Trejo, an easily walkable avenue filled with some of the city’s most illustrious colonial buildings.

You will undoubtedly discover the contrast that exists between the technology of the 21st century and the history of the colonial period. Beautiful parks, historical places, museums and different attractions can be admired such as the colonial architecture of the Cathedral; the Cabildo that dates back to the 17th century; the Obispo Mercadillo House built at the beginning of the 18th century the Religious Art Museum, the Monserrat School, the oldest school that dates back to 1685, and the Jesus Society, the oldest church in the country and the famous and prestigious National University of Cordoba, which attracts thousands of students from other parts of the country and the rest of South America.

Because Cordoba attracts so many students to its university, it is not surprising that there are also schools for foreigners who wish to study Spanish. Europeans, particularly Germans, make up the present majority of foreigners studying Spanish. Gus Christensen, an American student who studied for four weeks through AmeriSpan’s program in Cordoba had the following comments for anyone interested in learning Spanish in Latin America: It is a very comfortable city. It’s so easy to feel at home and the people are so friendly. It is easy to find culture, good food, and good nightlife. But, you’re reminded that you’re still in Latin America because of the bus system that doesn’t always work too well. I was also able to go horseback riding and enjoy the countryside about a half hour outside of the city.

The most rewarding asset of it all is the province’s warm and willing people. The infrastructure is adequate though never luxurious, the roads are often winding but never hair-raising, and the sights are singular while serene. The seasons are opposite of North America, which makes Argentina a great winter getaway. Cordoba’s tourist circuits spread out from the capital city like the spokes of a wheel, and many can be covered comfortably in a day.

Activities available in and around Cordoba:
 Horseback riding & polo classes
Dance classes: Tango and Argentine folk music

Are You Algebraically Challenged?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

What is Algebra?

Mathematics has long been one of the most horrifying subjects in American schools. Although children in other nations graduate with excellence in maths, many of the common high school age students in the United States scratch their heads when given questions about converting fractions to decimals, converting measures and units, resolving radical inequalities, or solving radical equations. It makes sense that this predicament is as broad as it is. Algebra consists of various complex mathematical equations that it is easy for a student to get lost when expected to explain synthetic division or adding fractions . For that matter, letters are heavily used for replacing the numbers when it comes to algebra. While this isn’t highly complex in and of itself, it brings itself poorly to the ‘jump in and play’ aspect of some math. Put simply, the ability to execute a particular algebraic task is based on the person already knowing a task that preceded it. This is to say that Algebra is a procedure that expects mastery of each step in order to progress. A student can’t hope for finding square root radicals and roots when he or she has not mastered proportions and ratios, or converting measures and units.

Technological Breakthroughs:

While this is not a recent development, it seems that mathematics grades have slipped even further in recent years. This possibly caused by many causes, but no answer will come out as a result of blame game. There have been only a fistful of external aid available for children to enhance mathematics skills when out of the classroom. What little software or program there was, more geared towards assisting younger children grasp the concepts of arithmetic. Fortunately, the market for such a product has coincided with the technology essential, providing an influx of ‘algebra software‘ or ‘algebra solver‘ programs that allow the mastery of algebra to anyone who is equipped with standard computer knowledge.

Algebra Software Programs:

These algebra calculators vary depending on the brand and the program. Some may offer such abilities as graphing a circle, or solving simultaneous equations, but may not have the programming essential for resolving exponential equations or adding exponents . The users are advised to evaluate the algebra software upon purchase, although nearly all the computer software promote their features. The best bet for anybody who is interested in computer aid for subtracting rational expressions or converting decimals to fractions; basically, whatever particular requirement you would have, is to consult the cyberspace and research the product in question.

Zimmer Durom Cup Lawyer Not Advantageous for Hip Implant Recipients

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Numerous unfortunate people who experienced zimmer metasul durom used in their hip cup replacement surgeries are learning that there are negative ramifications that far exceed the normal expectations for recovery. These unfortunate people are feeling a lot of additive pain sensation for longer periods of time, facing revision surgical operations and elevated medical costs, and losing income by being unable to work at their official jobs. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is laying claim that that their implant could never be faulty and say it is not their fault for the faulth cup hip implants, some poor people are filing lawsuits against them and receiving settlements.

In October, 2008 Zimmer announced that it had set-aside $47.5 million to compensate for lawsuits they had received. Many doctors are not so sure that the hip implant device is not faulty as the company has suggested. In Point Of Fact, when Zimmer offered up on-line coaching to surgeons in order to teach them what was supposedly more accurate techniques for doing the implant operation, roughly 1/2 of the physicians declined to take part. Thus, the entire situation continues to be stressful for all patients attached, but none more than the hundreds of individuals who are facing revision operation due to the problems with their implant not staying secure in the socket.

These tormented patients definitely merit some assistance and compensation which is the reason product liability attorneys are supporting them by telling them to initiate lawsuits. zimmer lawyer has been settling some of these claims, too. Nonetheless, even if the payoff they are being offered seems like a lot to them, in many cases people are resolving too quickly and without provision put in place for on-going troubles down the road. If they don’t hold off and wait, to find out what an actual case is worth, individuals may find themselves paying thousands of dollars out of their own pocket when more medical issues exist or surface.

For anyone who thinks they do have a claim against Zimmer should start checking into it. If you believe you may qualify, you should telephone a lawyer to be certain. Look for one that operates countrywide and focuses on processing litigation against defective medical devices. This law firm has done the extra work and setup a special division to uncover the details and process claims against Zimmer and win substantial settlements for their customers.

If your orthopedic surgeon updates you with bad news that you will definitely have to undergo a revision surgical process to resolve your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, call an lawyer as soon as humanly possible.

A Tale of the Early Skiing Holidays to Chamonix Ski Resort

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

In 1770 the first hotel was opened up in Chamonix. Prior to this Chamonix France was a savage and tough agrarian town where the locals caught their animals and farmed their oats.

Farms at this time were used to raise dairy herds over the summer months. Milk was preserved by transforming it into different types of cheese and stored in the farm for eating during the harsh winter times. Throughout the winter season the farms were barred, and any valued possessions were locked in a liitle hut.

The person who came up with catered chalet holidays is obscured by time, it was probably various spirited people who realized a set up which worked. For Erna Low it started whilst she was a homesick student and could not afford to visit her family back home as frequently as she wished. And so in 1932 she took a risk and took out a ad in the Times to tempt clients on a skiing break. The cost was £15 and they travelled to and from the resort, had dinner and board in the sole chalet, and paid for ski hire and instruction. The holiday was arduous work, there were no lifts, no safety fixings, only strong leather shoes, it was so popular that Erna Low kept on taking skiers on trips, making sure she employed first-class hotels and skiing guides.

The chalet trips during the formative years were a long way to the luxuries we can receive today. In the early days hot water was in limited supply, the bathrooms had to be shared by all of the punters, and there was no a cook; all the clients had to help out. It was a complete lottery as to who might share the chalet for the week, you may be pleasantly surprised to meet new skiers, or grimace at the thought of having to spend any more time with them.

The chalet holiday was later marketed on its new bonuses. Your own cook, who would serve you cooked breakfast and an evening meal and prepared you afternoon tea, lots of hot water for bathing.

South San Francisco Bay Charter’s Handbook – Day Chartering

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Day Chartering

The most popular day chartering activity is sailing north to
the San Mateo Bridge and back. This can generally be done
in 4 hours or less even in the small boats. For short sails,
charterers can get half-day charter rates on weekdays. Half
day charters start officially at 2:00 p.m. but there is a
one-hour grace period for earlier check in if the boat is not
being used in the morning. It’s okay to sail north beyond the
San Mateo Bridge but it’s not advisable to go south. The
channel in the south approaching the Dumbarton Bridge
gets narrow, is not marked and the sides are steep.
Additionally, it’s usually a beat to get back to the Redwood
City area and there is little traffic so assistance may be hard
to obtain should it become necessary.

The area between Redwood City and the San Mateo Bridge
is a great day sailing area. The wind comes up almost every
afternoon from early spring to mid fall. The wind chop isn’t
excessive except perhaps mid channel when there is an
ebbing current opposing the strong northwesterly wind. The
water is deep enough for sailing at least a mile wide at the
Redwood City Channel entrance and gets wider
approaching the San Mateo Bridge. It doesn’t get too
shallow until a couple hundred yards from the bridge
causeway. In the winter, light wind can be expected most of
the time when there are no storms. During winter storms,
the wind builds from the south and shifts to the northwest
as each cold front passes. After the front, there is often a
period of good northwest wind and clear sky with puffy white
cumulous clouds. This can last a day or so unless another
storm is following close behind the previous one.

When conditions get too rough on the Bay, there’s usually
good sailing in Redwood City Channel. The minimum width
is 300 feet and there are two turning basins wide enough to
allow the largest ships to turn around. The wind generally
blows across the channel from the marshes west of the
channel. This makes for nice reaching up and down the
channel with in the strong breeze yet smooth water.

Destinations in Southern Germany – Nuremberg

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Nuremberg will always be associated with two events – the Nazi party rallies held on the Zeppelinwiese, and the post-war Nuremberg trials. These events definitely should be remembered, but there is more to the history of this city.

Nrnberg, as Nuremberg is called in German, used to be a Free Imperial City during the time of the Holy Roman Empire and became part of Bavaria in the early 19th century. It was a major trading center, and the wealthy merchant families became great patrons of the arts.

The main tourist attractions are:

  • The Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg) with its collection of medieval arms and armor

  • The Albrecht-Drer-Haus dedicated to the city’s most famous son, the great painter (though most of his major works can be found elsewhere, such as in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum or Munich’s Alte Pinakothek)

  • The Germanisches Nationalmuseum with its enormous collections of paintings, sculpture, domestic furnishings and historical musical instruments

  • The German Railway Museum (after all, the first German railway ran from Nuremberg to Frth)

  • Spielzeugmuseum der Stadt Nrnberg (Toy Museum) – Nuremberg has always been famous for toys and still hosts the annual German Toy Fair.
  • If you come in December, you should visit the Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market) and experience the wonderful smell and taste of Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Glhwein (hot mulled wine) while shopping for traditional ornaments.

Also, try out the local specialty – bratwurst. These sausages are tiny (about the size of your pinky), so you order them by the dozen or more.

Charter Bus Company and Charter Buses

    Saturday, March 28th, 2009

A charter bus company is a great way to transport people to a variety of places. Many people have invested in charter buses to get them to and from a desired destination, affording the riders as much comfort and luxury as possible. These charter buses have many amenities to help pass the time away while in route such as DVD players, movie watching, onsite restrooms, and comfortable seating.

A charter bus company can also be useful when it comes to planning special trips. For example, many schools have opted to use charter buses to take them to amusement parks in different cities, even states. Let’s say you have a junior high school of 300 graduates. You are interested in doing something special for their hard work and dedication this past year, so you find good deals to take them to have some fun. You hook up with a charter bus company and they offer discounts that allow this fun to take place. Everyone who is eligible to go to the amusement park arrives at midnight and picks your group up. For many of these kids, this is their first trip without their parents and they are able to hang out with their friends and have fun. The ride begins with good conversation and the entertainment of a PG movie. Eventually, the kiddos tire out and they sleep through the night. While this happens, the charter bus in trekking across the state lines and getting ready to take your group to a day filled with fun and memories.

Other reasons for a charter bus company is to take different groups on sightseeing adventures. Say you have a group from Florida who wants to take a trip to see the West Coast. They may choose to take charter buses from destination to destination to take in all the sites of areas like California and its coastline, sunny Phoenix, and/or the coolness and beauty of Oregon. The charter bus company has afforded this group the opportunity to sightsee and enjoy their trip.

Other reasons a charter bus company would be a great place to check out for trips are for church folks to travel in style to concerts or basketball games. Usually larger churches choose to invest in charter buses of their own so they can transport their members to and from these places easier. If the churches do that, they can charge transportation fees if needed and use this money for other projects within the church. Basketball and other sports team can transport players via the use of charter buses. The smaller community colleges or Christian schools might purchase these charter buses from a charter company to maximize the school’s use of the bus.

A History of Greece as the Yachting Capital of the World

    Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

In 1969 Bill Lefakinis a Greek born and United States bred businessman envisioned a dream, which has since become a reality – Greece, The Yachting Capital of the World.

Bill left Greece at the early age of 13 to pursue a better life and future for himself and his family. Bill attended the Hackley School and The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business on full scholarships and served in the US Army and the Greek Air Force. Having worked and traveled extensively as Chief Executive Officer of Filtrine International Co., Bill finally returned to Greece in 1969 where he started his own company, Valef Yachts.

At that time there were no marinas in Greece and only about 30 yachts, 20 of which were for private use. There was no national concept of the wealth Greece had to offer to the yachting world. Its unique history, civilization, hospitality, 4,000 islands and 13,000 miles of seashore (twice that of the USA where only 18% was yacht friendly compared to Greece’s 99%) made it most ideal for the world of yacht chartering. Bill, after realizing the immense potential of Greek yachting, went to work applying his know-how taken from his Greek and American business exposure. He convinced four of his friends to let him charter their yachts and after almost forty years of constant work, marketing, public relations, pressure to the various Greek Governments to promote this unique tourist feature that is second to NONE, Bill’s dedication finally paid off. Today, Greece has over 20,000 yachts for charter and for private use, and over 50 marinas. Valef Yachts became a successful and trusted company with offices in the states and in Greece. Bill began his company and single-handedly created a vision and a revolution in the yachting world in Greece with his motto since 1969 being, “Discover The Yachting World of Greece.”

To accomplish this, together with Panos Tsafos, Bill founded and presided over The Professional Yacht Owners Association, became Secretary General of the Hellenic Yacht Brokers Association and Consultants Association, and organized the Association of Greek Yacht Crews in order to coordinate efforts to improve yacht chartering in Greece. He also started a magazine called “Sea and Yachting” to enlighten Greeks about the beauty of their islands, their potential as well as the importance of participating in seawater sports. He constantly wrote caustic articles addressed to the Greek Government regarding their apathy about improving conditions and laws to govern properly professional yachting in Greece. Bill also became co-publisher of the English Daily Newspaper “Athens Mirror,” in 1971, became a member of the Foreign Press Association, The Greek Travel Agents Association, Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce, Greek Ship owner’s Club and many others.

In his efforts to promote Greece internationally, Bill brought the Miss Universe Contest to Greece in 1973 (it was the first time they held the competition overseas); movies James Bond in 1980 & 1983 and The Greek Tycoon; TV series The Love Boat in 1980, Heart to Heart, The Life Styles of the Rich and Famous with Robin Leach, The Evening Magazine (which featured Greece for one entire week), The Arthur Frommer Show, Eyes on LA, Canadian and Japanese Government television; magazines Playboy and Penthouse, Conde Nast’s “The Traveler” and dozens of other international TV shows, movies and magazines continuing to the present. Internationally noted personalities were brought to Greece by Bill to promote yachting. To name a few, Hugh Hefner and daughter Christina, Bob Cuccione, John and Bo Derek, John Wayne, Anthony Quinn, Christina Onassis, Baron Hans Heinrich von Thyssen, Patricia Gucci – fashion designer,
Claude Arpels – Van Cleef and Arpels jewellers,
Garavani Valentino – fashion designer, Max Fisher, John Clinton (Chairman of Dunhill and Rothman Group), Ernest Gallo, Giovanni-Yanelli of Fiat, Henry Ford II of Ford Motor Corporation, Roger Smith, ex-CEO of General Motors, ex-Chairman of the Board of Intercontinental Hotels Corp. Mr. Hans Sternik, ex-German President Richard Fon Weizsacker, internationally acclaimed cellist Mr. Rostropovich, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, John Denver, Kenny Rogers and Charlton Heston. He has been an advisor to the Greek National Tourist Organization, Greek Ministry of the Merchant Marine and member of the Greek Government’s Advisory Council for the Development of Greece, yachting marinas, and the yachting infrastructure.

In 1978, with the increasingly heavy air pollution in Athens and water pollution in the Hellenic Seas, Bill co-founded “PAKOE” (The Panhellenic Ecological Research Foundation) together with a group of volunteer scientists and doctors. As the Secretary General of the organization, he chartered airplanes and helicopters to take hundreds of air samples by University and Government scientists (including reporters abroad) to analyze the contents for air pollution around the Acropolis, Athens as well had several Valef Yachts with the same groups to test for water pollution in the seas. All evidence was confirmed by Government scientific laboratories and independent research centers. The high extent of pollution was widely published with articles, photos to all the media as well as full reports to the Greek Authorities including the President, Prime Minister and all parliamentary members. As a matter of fact, pollution was the main subject for the next year’s election. Now the Greek Seas are the cleanest in Europe according to the findings of the European Union and the air pollution has dropped dramatically, the Parthenon is protected and many laws have been made to protect the environment.

Bill and Kathy, his wife of 27 years; run the North American Headquarters of Valef Yachts and Bill travels frequently to the Greek headquarters always keeping his finger on the pulse of the market. Kathy and Bill met in 1978 while she was traveling in Greece. Within months they were married and moved to Greece where they settled and began working together. Kathy and Bill realized in 1981 the need to establish a USA North and South American Headquarters for more direct contact and more efficient response and information for potential clients. Running two offices half way around the world from each other keep Kathy and Bill quite busy.

In 1986 Bill, as President of Valef Yachts and President of the Yacht Owners Association, invited 200 American yacht brokers on 20 yachts to “Discover the Yachting World of Greece.” They went to many islands where mayors of the islands greeted all with parties and festivities and the famous Greek Easter was celebrated with the traditional roasted lamb on the fire and great fun was had by all.

Such hard work leads to an appreciation and understanding of a proper vacation. This has given them further insight into the development of the ultimate holiday vacation that caters that caters to the clients every desire. The personal touch and hands on approach offered by the yacht owners make chartering a luxury yacht with Valef Yachts a true pleasure.

Bill and Kathy’s two daughters, Alexandra and Kassandra, have spent numerous summers working in the yachting business, learning the ropes from the ground up. Having been brought up in both countries spending quality time in Europe and cruising the Aegean, they have a great head start in knowing Greece, what yachting is all about, and what the client ultimately desires. Alexandra and Kassandra both passionately work where Valef Yachts has its roots; and continue to infuse fresh energy into their family business and one of the first names in Greek Yachting.

Valef Yachts remains a company that continues to flourish, raise industry standards and client expectations while remaining firmly anchored in the ever-flourishing Greek yachting community. All of the above activities have finally helped establish Greece as the Center of the Yachting World!
