Volunteer Anthony Loeff is writing about screen readers for visually impaired

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers.

Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. Comming season Anthony Loeff medical volunteer is testing screen readers for visually impaired people The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca.

Indeed functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader. Near 21 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix. A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

Most legally blind people 67 percent do not use computers. The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. Nevertheless, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. Increasingly, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

911 Could Have Been Prevented, Was It Bush’s Fault?

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

September 11, 2001 could have been prevented. We could have stopped that International Terrorist Act had we just employed a few simple tools. If we would have simply kept our eyes and ears open and had a plan in place. Was it Bush’s fault? No, it was America’s fault. It is our fault for thinking every thing was fine and that the CIA and FBI could protect us from any one of a hundred different types of attacks. International Terrorists have so many ways to attack us.

Rumsfeld is correct when he said; “we have to be right all the time; they only have to be right once!” Yes in fact this is true, that means it is up to every American to keep their eyes and ears open and to make certain that we take up the responsibility to know our communities and neighbors. It is so ironic that every time they catch one of these International Terrorists in the United States that they live in a middle class neighborhood and have a squeaky clean record. How on Earth would anyone suspect them?

Well if you keep your eyes and ears open and pay attention it may not be as hard as you think at all. I have developed a plan that would have prevented these terrorist attacks. It is not Bush’s fault, how could it have been, I never sent in my idea. I have never even met the gentleman. My plan is a take off on the Neighborhood Watch Theme, with a special emphasis on becoming the eyes and ears of the community. Not just one community all communities. To be a mobile net-centric community watch program, which will make us strong and tight. Here is my plan: http://www.lancewinslow.org/nmwp.shtml

You see folks it is not Bush’s fault he inherited the humungous bureaucracy. It is our fault for not seeking proof that government was protecting us. We all assumed; you and I and everyone, that we were being protected. Yet in reality that is a totally false assumption how on Earth can you protect against International Terrorism? You can’t. You need human intel on the ground, everywhere all the time. If we had such a thing in place like this Mobile Neighborhood Watch Program before 9-11 then we surely would have caught the bad guys, because everyone would have been heads up about the real problems and vulnerabilities we have in a free society. We now know and we are watching and chances are we will keep catching the bad guys because we are diligent in our efforts to keep a look out. The authorities are too, but they cannot be everywhere all the time. That’s where you can come in and set up a neighborhood mobile watch program in your community today. Think on this.

Education – How Important Is College?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

This is a debate that has and will go on until the world itself stops spinning. But the truth is, the way the world is constantly changing, a college education isn’t the be all and end all that it used to be. That is not to say that college isn’t important. But how important? Well, that all depends on what you want to do with your life. We’ll take a look at some of the factors involved in determining just how important college will be to you.

The first thing that even a good teacher will admit, is that not everybody is suited for college. Some students just don’t have the smarts or the grades. That is not to say that they can’t be successful in life without getting an education after high school that involves going to a fancy university.

Let’s face it. A lot of this world is run by people who work with their hands. Think you’re going to get through life without having a sink clog that’s so bad that no amount of Liquid Plumber is going to get it out? It happens. Plus, pipes get old, rusty and fall apart. For these jobs we need plumbers. Try to imagine a life without one. Well, in case you didn’t know, plumbers don’t have to go to college. A good technical school specializing in things like plumbing and heating is all the education these people need. The schools specialize in just what they need to learn to get the job done. They don’t have to take English Lit and Chemistry and there’s no need for them to have to.

Having said that, if you want to be a doctor, well, college is pretty much the least of your worries because that is only a preview of the real work ahead of you, four years of medical school. Same thing if you’re planning on being a lawyer. There’s about three years of law school after that.

But what if you want to do something that’s sort of in between technical and the college “professions?” For example, let’s just say you want to work in a bank as a teller? Do you really need to go to college for that? Certainly everything you’ve needed to learn to do a job that simple has been learned in high school. So what is college going to do for you? Will it help you get the job any easier? Will it make the job itself any easier? This is where many people disagree.

The die hard college advocates argue that, because the competition is so fierce for even the simplest of jobs, not having a college education is the same as cursing yourself to a life of unemployment. The argument is that everyone goes to college today and not to go is plain suicide. Doesn’t matter if you really need it or not. You just have to go in order to have any chance.

Those who aren’t so gung ho college argue that there are kids that just don’t belong there and to keep them from earning a living for another four years and on top of that add another $100,000 plus to their debt is just plain ridiculous. These kids should find jobs right away. Even by working in a shipping department, if you get in with a good company, you can work your way up to the point where you’re making a nice living.

So who’s right and who’s wrong? Most likely, there is no right or wrong. Everybody is different and each student has to decide what is best for him or her.

Vinyl Fencing Is A Viable Alternative To Wood

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

There’s nothing worse than having to go out and paint a fence every few years. Up and down. Up and down. It feels like your arms will fall off! For those who hate dealing with the regular, routine maintenance associated with wood fencing, vinyl fencing is a solid alternative. It has some great advantages over wood with very few downfalls.

Vinyl fencing is a fairly new creation that was born out of all things – the PVC pipe industry. That’s right. PVC pipe is some incredible stuff. It’s not just for plumbing any more. Everything from furniture and robots to fences are made from this stuff, and there’s a good reason for it: It’s easy to work with, it holds its appearance and it’s simple to maintain.

Vinyl fencing has come a long way since it was first introduced. Earlier models of the fencing, made from PVC, were prone to break down after exposure in the sun. Now, specialized coating is used to protect the material’s form, shape and appearance. In fact, the vinyl fencing made today stands up better-than-well in the elements, but it did take some time for manufacturers to figure out a process to make that so.

Vinyl is a bit different than wood when it comes to fencing. It has its advantages and disadvantages. They include:
Pros:

* Vinyl is strong. It’s harder than break or tear than wood and it’s flexible, too. Considering its plastic qualities, it’s also very good at holding its shape.

* Easy maintenance. Vinyl only needs to be washed to maintain its appearance. There’s no need to paint it – ever!

* The color is the same throughout. Wood fencing can have one color on the surface and another inside. This will make scratches, dings, dents and especially breaks stand out more. This isn’t the case with vinyl. Vinyl hides imperfections well.

Cons:

* Movement. Vinyl expands when it’s heated. This means it can move. If it gets extremely hot, it can take on the properties no one wants to see in their fencing. The good news, however, is that this only occurs in extreme temperatures nearing the 200 degrees F range!

* Colors are limited. Because of the heating issues, vinyl fencing can only be found in light colors. It can, of course, be made to resemble wood, which is not a bad thing, but you won’t find it in darker, wood colors. And if you do, stay away!

Vinyl fencing is a great way to go for homeowners or businesses that don’t want to spend a lot of time on maintenance. More expensive than wood or chain link, the costs can be justified by the fact this fencing doesn’t need to be painted or treated and it tends to stand up to the test of time better. It’s stronger and more durable and simply only requires a good cleaning to look brand new again. For many the investment is well worth the time savings vinyl presents.

The Popular Laptop Trends At The Present

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Its absurd that laptop computers are now becoming a common technology, as if you should have one. It looks like the poor manufacturers are also tackling problems that could cause delays. Despite credit crunches and other economic conditions laptop sales have increased year on year and it doesn’t seem to slow down any time soon. Also with notebook computers now it seems like every couple of months or so the technology is already lapped with something else.

I’ve witnessed a lot of gaming notebooks being launched lately. These laptop computers are also in value because of the tough competition faced from low priced laptops. I play games on my notebook on a frequent basis and must say I’m delighted how playable some of the demanding games are. Power aside, also worth a mention is the drastically sleek case designs we are seeing these days. Ok so there remains a gap in performance no matter how good gaming notebooks have become but that should always remain. Gaming notebooks will no doubt get slicker and more powerful in the future and it will be exciting to see.

I think we’re seeing greater amounts of start-up companies exclusively peddling custom built notebooks. The benefit with a few custom notebooks is that you get improved after market components fitted in them. The advantageous aspect is that you do not end up forking out for needless extra’s you do not need. The laptop computers seen in retail are for typical activities. You can get a far suitable notebook by obtaining it custom built. The great thing is that there are a lot of resellers who make laptops and they give great service as well. To some buyers this is very significant.

Cool is a word that comes to mind when thinking of the future line of notebook computers. The prevailing trend along with those spoken of seems to be low priced umpc’s. The Asus Eee just built a new niche sector. In my view the market would adapt well to a 15 inch version based on the exact roots. Companies must be engaged on a solution to this by now. The way the market is evolving I can tell gaming notebooks will get slimmer. New notebooks are commonly top secret before launch so there is no telling what new products we’ll see.

Hemorrhoids – Description, Symptoms and Treatment

Friday, June 20th, 2008

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids (or piles are they are more commonly known) are simply the veins in your anus which have become distended (swollen with blood). This is very similar to varicose veins, where the vein becomes large and lumpy, only these veins are around the anus which makes it a bit more embarrassing.

The vein swelling can affect the part of the anal canal just above the sphincter where it is less well supported and protected causing Internal Hemorrhoids. Or it can affect the veins at the lower end of the canal causing External Hemorrhoids. Either of these types can exhibit the same kinds of symptoms and are generally quite uncomfortable in most cases.

Hemorrhoids affect approximately 50% of the population and appear to be distributed evenly across both male and females although anecdotally, it appears that pregnant women are quite susceptible to this condition.

What are the symptoms of Hemorrhoids?

There are a number of symptoms of Hemorrhoids which as is usual with most medical symptoms could be any one of a number of medical conditions. The best advice anyone could receive if they’re not sure, is to see a doctor as soon as possible. Some of the other conditions which have similar symptoms to Hemorrhoids range from things like threadworm and colon cancer. It is always best to go to your doctor and find out that you have nothing to worry about than to not go and only find out when the condition has become a lot worse than it could have been.

The main symptoms of Hemorrhoids are

Passing bowel movements are painful.

You have an itchy anus.

There are one or more painful or tender fleshy lumps in the anus area.

There is a feeling that your bowels are never empty.

Normally these symptoms are at worst uncomfortable and don’t stop you from conduction your day to day business. However, in a few rare situations, they can be very painful if they are associated with a splitting of the anus (known as an anal fissure).

What is the treatment for Hemorrhoids?

In most instances, Hemorrhoids can be treated successfully without any professional medical intervention. Despite that though, as I mentioned earlier, it is always best to consult a doctor if you’re unsure or the condition lasts for more than a couple of weeks.

Some examples of the treatment for hemorrhoids are to eat a lot of foods rich in fibre. This can help to prevent constipation which can aggravate the condition.

Closely related to constipation, is to avoid straining and to use soft toilet tissue. Then wash the area with warm water.

From all pharmacies, you should be able to buy some creams over the counter called Corticosteroids which contain a local anaesthetic and will soothe the pain and discomfort. They are not recommended for long term use though.

There are three other treatments which all require you to visit a medical practitioner.

The first is where a chemical is injected into the hemorrhoid which causes them to shrivel up.

The second way, is called Banding. Where a rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid. The Hemorrhoid then shrinks and eventually falls off.

The final option is surgery called hemorrhoidectomy which is only conducted very rarely as less traumatic methods named above are used. This option would normally be used on internal hemorrhoids which are very large.

If you want to read more about this subject from other people visit my website http://www.piles-cure.com/ where you’ll lots of useful information on the treatment and symptoms of Hemorrhoids.

What to Ask Before Attending a Meeting

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Managers spend much of their time in meetings. But some junior staff use meetings to showcase themselves. Or they invite their boss to help with work that they should be doing. In either case, such meetings waste your time.

Here are five questions that you (or your assistant) must ask before agreeing to attend a meeting.

1) Where is the agenda? A meeting without an agenda is like a journey without a map; it will always waste your time. Once you have the agenda, make sure that it consists of more than a list of words because this is almost useless. The agenda for an effective meeting provides a complete description of how the meeting will proceed.

2) What is the goal? Is the chair seeking an agreement, a solution, or a plan? Knowing the goal gives you head start on participating effectively. Be cautious of meetings that are held just “to talk about something,” because this type of meeting seldom accomplishes anything.

3) What is my role? Make sure that your participation adds value to the meeting. Avoid meetings where you have a superficial role, such as to find out what’s happening. In that case, ask for the minutes. If you’re needed to work on only part of the agenda, ask if you can attend only that part of the meeting.

4) How should I prepare? Make sure that you know about any research, readings, or surveys required to participate. Ask about the expectations for the other participants because this could influence your preparation. Attend only if you can prepare adequately or suggest another time for the meeting.

5) What should I bring? Should you bring a laptop? Will you be asked to give a presentation? Should you bring reports, data, or other information? Make sure that you have enough time to obtain the tools and materials needed for effective participation.

These questions will help you look like a success when you attend meetings.
